We decided to search for some of the different-looking Blogger templates and found dozens of pretty creations, many inspired by themes from Wordpress and other blog hosts. Below is a list of some select 2,3 and 4 column Blogger templates and themes sourced from across the blogosphere. Enjoy.

Andreas02 - Lots of tab links above the header. You can showcase the description of each active tab on the header.

Andreas08 - From the same author of the one above. The header is ready to be customised with your own picture.

Agua - A minimalistic clean template giving a pure white look.

Cajas - A blog tittle in a header that looks like the Blogger navbar and five menu links with multi-color backgrounds that tool the place of the traditional blog header.

Colibri - This reminds you of a garden, doesn’t it?

Dead - This one can be described as heavy metal/rock style - sinister and dark.

Eclipse - Another dark theme that brings werewolves to mind. An enchanting template for the dark souls.

Emire - Beautiful color combination but I wish there was more width for the post and the sidebar.

Hada-negra - A beautiful template - seductive and pleasing to the eyes.

Integral - The most striking visual details on this template are its rounded header and the green and sky-blue color combination.

iPhone - An elaborate Wordpress theme converted into Blogger. The large header button could probably be used better.

K2 - A popular Wordpress theme cloned for Blogger.

Minyx - A template that looks like an invitation card. Good use of space in the header.

Mushblue - Striking header color and works well with the dark background.

Natural - If you are the artistic kind, this one will be a feast for your eyes.

Neoneon - This is another unique design - rectangle sidebar boxes and spiral main body.

Red-White Web 2.0 - The buttons are nice. The search bar looks like a candy bar. The color combination is good. A template true to its name.

S08 - A blue color body on a darker blue background - you might have thought it won’t work? But here it is.

Vertical - As a the name suggests, this is a vertically designed clean template. You might want to throw in some more code and utilize the space below the blog title better.

Web 2.0 - A black and white template with a slight touch of blue color on the blog logo and the RSS feed.

3-column templates

Andreas4 - Another popular Wordpress template by Andreas cloned for Blogger. The template can be used as a bare bone structure for customization.

Autumn Grass - I like the color combination and the vertical menu links in the header. There is also sufficient space there for ads and videos.

Beautiful Red Apple - Another nice Wordpress theme converted into a Blogger template, has a 940px width frame, lots of space and customization possibilities.

Butterfly Magic - Another beautiful color combination, or shall we call it just another butterfly effect

Clean Elegant - Here’s one for all you Photoshop lovers, though we could do without the Adsense ad box, which spoils the whole meaning of the template.

Columnas - This theme’s peculiar design stands out from the rest of the templates in this list. Nice and clean.

Cultivado - Neat, floral, elegant - this one’s perfect for writing on life, philosophy, thoughts, poetry, love and the like.

Dark Ritual - A nice theme which somehow reminds us of Adams Family.

Erudite - A neat three-column Blogger template with the black color header and the orange color RSS icon gelling well.

Fluid Solution - Another cool black and white look.

Fresh Blogger Template - A fresh looking (it really is) green and blue theme. Great usability.

Garland - Drupal’s default look copied to Blogger. Soothing to the eyes, isn’t it?

Glow - If Hellboy or Flash Gordon wanted to blog, this is one template they might like.

Green Marinee - A long time favorite of many bloggers ported to Blogger. Great use of space, and a nice color combination.

Hemingway - A beautiful dark template - one column for the post body and three column on the footer.

Illacrimo - A beautiful clone for Blogger from the Wordpress theme Illacrimo, though I feel there should be a way to use more space currently taken by the date-display on the left of the screen.

Informativo - A similar template to the Columnas template above but with the header, for the less-unconventional bloggers who wants to stick with the proven.

Likewise v1.1 - A clean white template with one column for the post and with three column footer on a black background.

Magazine-Style - A nice template if you have a lot of information and widgets to display up front. It has got a three columns in the main area as well as in the footer area.

Minimalista - Another great port from Wordpress to Blogger.

Minyx 2.0 - A great template without pictures; good use of available space.

Pink Flower - A simple and elegant template with an image of, you guessed it, a pink flower.

Pizza - Don’t be dissuaded by the pizza theme if you are thinking of using this for a different subject blog. The template is highly customizable. The unique element in this template is the header which has been divided into two parts. You can display your blog logo or tittle on the left-side header box while using the other box for whatever you like.

Pro - A different-look search box, menu links above the blog title, and the graduated blue header background in a unique design makes this template unique.

Puerto - Somehow this template makes the post body look grand and majestic.

The Hobbit - If you are a fan of Tolkien, this one is for you.

Neo - A 3 column template that reloads in parts allowing faster reading and surfing.

4-column templates

Slined Mod 2.0 - Somehow, this one seems to fit a music/gaming theme best.

Neosapian - The contrast between black and red is striking. The second right-hand sidebar can be widen further and the red header can be used subtly for ads or to display more information. You decide whether to change the current header image or not

Qwilm - A simple looking great design that can be customized to a great extent.

1. eDonkey / Overnet

eDonkey/Overnet is a state-of-the-art P2P file sharing software system. Especially popular in Europe, the two P2P networks eDonkey and Overnet combined support a large base of users and files. The eDonkey P2P client connects to both networks; the Overnet client is being merged into future releases of eDonkey. eDonkey runs on Windows, Linux and Macintosh computers. The free version of eDonkey contains embedded advertising but none of the dreaded "spyware" found in some free file sharing software.

2. Shareaza

Shareaza is an up-and-coming P2P file sharing program. This client offers an extremely powerful search engine capable of connecting to multiple popular P2P networks including eDonkey, BitTorrent and Gnutella. Shareaza file sharing software includes intelligence for detecting fake and/or corrupted files. The free Shareaza download also contains no ads or spyware. As the installed base of Shareaza client users grows, expect Shareaza to become an even better P2P file sharing program.

3. BitTorrent

BitTorrent is another free P2P software application. It has attracted a loyal following among those interested in sharing movies and television programs. The offical BitTorrent P2P client generally does not support bandwidth throttling, meaning that it will tend to monopolize a network connection and not allow surfing the Internet or otherwise utilizing the network while files are being downloaded or uploaded. Sometimes billed as the "fastest file sharing program," Limewire claims to offer relatively good search and download performance. Free Limewire software downloads are available for Windows, Linux and Macintosh operating systems. Limewire Pro pay clients also exist.

5. Morpheus

Morpheus P2P client application downloads exist in both free and paid Ultra versions. Compared to the free version, the Morpheus Ultra download additionally removes bundled advertising. Morpheus clients are capable of searching Gnutella2, FastTrack, eDonkey2K and Overnet P2P networks.

The eMule project started with the goal of building an improved free eDonkey client. eMule has achieved a large user base, connecting both to the eDonkey P2P file sharing network and a few others. What ports does BitTorrent use? Will it work with a firewall/NAT?

Prior to version 3.2, BitTorrent by default uses ports in the range of 6881-6889. As of 3.2 and later, the range has been extended to 6881-6999. (These are all TCP ports, BitTorrent does not use UDP.) The client starts with the lowest port in the range and sequentially tries higher ports until it can find one to which it can bind. This means that the first client you open will bind to 6881, the next to 6882, etc. Therefore, you only really need to open as many ports as simultaneous BitTorrent clients you would ever have open. For most people it's sufficient to open 6881-6889.

The port range that BitTorrent uses is configurable, see the section What are the command line parameters for the BitTorrent client?, specifically the --minport and --maxport parameters.

The trackers to which BitTorrent must connect usually are on port 6969, so the client must have outbound access on this port. Some trackers are on other ports, however.

BitTorrent will usually work fine in a NAT (network address translation) environment, since it can function with only outbound connections. Such environments generally include all situations where multiple computers share one publicly-visible IP address, most commonly: computers on a home network sharing a cable or xDSL connection.

However, you will get better speeds if you allow incoming connections as well. To do this you must use the "port forwarding" feature of whatever is performing the NAT/gateway task. For example, if you have a cable or DSL connection and a router/switch/gateway/firewall, you will need to go into the configuration of this device and forward ports 6881-6889 to the local machine that will be using BitTorrent. If your device makes it hard to enter a range of ports (if you must enter each one separately), then you can just do the first 10 or so ports, or however many simultaneous clients you plan to ever have open. If more than one person behind such a gateway wishes to use BitTorrent, then each machine should use a different port range, and the gateway should be configured to forward each port range to the corresponding local machine.

If you have one of these broadband router/NAT devices (such as the Linksys BEFSR41, D-Link DI-701/704, Netgear RT311, SMC Barricade, 3Com Home Ethernet Gateway, etc.) you will usually need to enter the web configuration of the device. If you're not sure, try http://192.168.1.1 or sometimes http://192.168.0.1. If you can't figure it out, try the manual for the device -- they are often on the manufacturer's web site in PDF form. You can also try the forums at places like Broadband Reports or Practically Networked. To see an example of what you're looking for, this is a link to the Linksys BEFSR41 manual. Look at page 55, under the section "Port Range Forwarding."

If you are using a software firewall, then you must also enable incoming connections to be answered by the BitTorrent client program. Note that Windows XP includes a primitive firewall ("Internet Connection Firewall" or ICF) which you may have to configure for BitTorrent. Here are the directions for opening ports in the Windows XP firewall:

Open the 'Network Connections' folder (click Start, then Control Panel, then Network and Internet Connections, then Network Connections.)
Click the shared connection or the Internet connection that is protected by Internet Connection Firewall, and then, under Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings.
For each port you wish to forward, (i.e. 6881, 6882, ... 6889) do the following:
1. On the Services tab, click Add and enter all of the following information:
2. In Description of service, type an easily recognized name for the service, such as "BitTorrent".
3. In Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network, enter 127.0.0.1 (this means "the local machine.")
4. In both External and Internal port number for this service, enter the port number, e.g. 6881.
5. Select TCP, then OK.

If you are running another type of software firewall (such as Zone Alarm Pro, Norton Firewall, McAfee Firewall, BlackICE Defender, etc.), you may have to do something similar to allow inbound access on ports 688x to the BitTorrent client (usually btdownloadgui.exe.)

For example, in Zone Alarm Pro, in the Program Listings, click on the program's name (btdownloadgui.exe) and then click the Options button and then enter the ports to use. If you're having trouble connecting, you might try giving BitTorrent access to all ports.

To open ports in the Mac OS X firewall, do the following:

Open System Preferences.
Click Sharing.
Select the Firewall tab.
Click the New... button.
Click the popup menu in the dialog that appears, and choose Other....
In the Port Number, Range, or Series field, enter 6881-6999.
In the Name field, enter BitTorrent (or any other identifying string.)
Click OK.

If you are using a linux box as your firewall machine, and are using iptables as your NAT/firewall, here's how you can enable portforwarding to a specific machine for BitTorrent. Either append to your iptable configuration script or put this in a file of its own. This was written in bash, but should work for ash, zsh or plain old bourne shell too (not csh however).

What this does is for each port in the BTPORTS string, establish a prerouting forward to send it directly to the machine listed in BTFORWARDADDR instead of mangling it through NAT. Also, in the event you have a default setting of DENY or REJECT for your forwarding rules, it allows forwarding from the BTFORWARDADDR machine on each of the BTPORTS out to the net.

In addition to the syntax illustrated here, iptables supports the specification of a range of ports using the syntax --dport $START:$END so the whole 6881-6999 range used in BT 3.2+ can be NAT'ed. For example...

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) communications protocol. BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the entire costs of hardware, hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead, when data is distributed using the BitTorrent protocol, each recipient supplies pieces of the data to newer recipients, reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source, providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence on the original distributor.

The protocol is the brainchild of programmer Bram Cohen, who designed it in April 2001 and released a first implementation on 2 July 2001. It is now maintained by Cohen's company BitTorrent, Inc.^[1]

Usage of the protocol accounts for significant traffic on the Internet, but the precise amount has proven difficult to measure.

There are numerous compatible BitTorrent clients, written in a variety of programming languages, and running on a variety of computing platforms.

A BitTorrent client is any program that implements the BitTorrent protocol. Each client is capable of preparing, requesting, and transmitting any type of computer file over a network, using the protocol. A peer is any computer running an instance of a client.

To share a file or group of files, a peer first creates a "torrent." This small file contains metadata about the files to be shared and the tracker, the computer that coordinates the file distribution. Peers that want to download the file first obtain a torrent file for it, and connect to the specified tracker, which tells them from which other peers to download the pieces of the file.

Though both ultimately transfer files over a network, a BitTorrent download differs from a classic full-file HTTP request in several fundamental ways:

BitTorrent makes many small P2P requests over different TCP sockets, while web-browsers typically make a single HTTP GET request over a single TCP socket.
BitTorrent downloads in a random or "rarest-first" approach that ensures high availability, while HTTP downloads in a contiguous manner.

Taken together, BitTorrent achieves much lower cost, much higher redundancy, and much greater resistance to abuse or "flash crowds" than a regular HTTP server. However, this protection comes at a cost: downloads take time to rise to full speed because these many peer connections take time to establish, and it takes time for a node to get sufficient data to become an effective uploader. As such, a typical BitTorrent download will gradually rise to very high speeds, and then slowly fall back down toward the end of the download. This contrasts with an HTTP server that, while more vulnerable to overload and abuse, rises to full speed very quickly and maintains this speed throughout.

In general, BitTorrent's non-contiguous download methods have prevented it from supporting "progressive downloads" or "streaming playback". But recent comments by Bram Cohen suggests that streaming torrent downloads will soon be commonplace.

The peer distributing a data file treats it as a number of identically-sized pieces, typically between 64 kB and 1 MB each. A piece size of greater than 512 kB will reduce the size of a torrent file for a very large payload, but is claimed to reduce the efficiency of the protocol [1]. The peer creates a checksum for each piece, using a hashing algorithm, and records it in the torrent file. When another peer later receives that piece, its checksum is compared to the recorded checksum to test that it is error-free.^[2] Peers that provide a complete file are called seeders, and the peer providing the initial copy is called the initial seeder.

The exact information contained in the torrent file depends on the version of the BitTorrent protocol. By convention, the name of a torrent file has the suffix .torrent. Torrent files have an "announce" section, which specifies the URL of the tracker, and an "info" section, containing (suggested) names for the files, their lengths, the piece length used, and a SHA-1 hash code for each piece, all of which is used by clients to verify the integrity of the data they receive.

Completed torrent files are typically published on websites or elsewhere, and registered with a tracker. The tracker maintains lists of the clients currently participating in the torrent.^[2] Alternatively, in a trackerless system (decentralized tracking) every peer acts as a tracker. This is implemented by the BitTorrent, µTorrent, BitComet and KTorrent clients through the distributed hash table (DHT) method. Azureus also supports a trackerless method that is incompatible (as of April 2007) with the DHT offered by all other supporting clients.

In November 2006, BitTorrent Inc. introduced its "Publish Torrent" service, which creates and hosts a torrent file (seeded from an existing web-hosted media file) and tracks downloads. The service (http://www.bittorrent.com/publish) requires a client that supports web-seeding (currently only the official client, Azureus and μTorrent).

Downloading torrents and sharing files

Users browse the web to find a torrent of interest, download it, and open it with a BitTorrent client. The client connects to the tracker(s) specified in the torrent file, from which it receives a list of peers currently transferring pieces of the file(s) specified in the torrent. The client connects to those peers to obtain the various pieces. Such a group of peers connected to each other to share a torrent is called a swarm. If the swarm contains only the initial seeder, the client connects directly to it and begins to request pieces. As peers enter the swarm, they begin to trade pieces with one another, instead of downloading directly from the seeder.

Clients incorporate mechanisms to optimize their download and upload rates; for example they download pieces in a random order, to increase the opportunity to exchange data, which is only possible if two peers have different pieces of the file.

The effectiveness of this data exchange depends largely on the policies that clients use to determine to whom to send data. Clients may prefer to send data to peers that send data back to them (a tit for tat scheme), which encourages fair trading. But strict policies often result in suboptimal situations, where newly joined peers are unable to receive any data (because they don't have any pieces yet to trade themselves) and two peers with a good connection between them do not exchange data simply because neither of them wants to take the initiative. To counter these effects, the official BitTorrent client program uses a mechanism called “optimistic unchoking,” where the client reserves a portion of its available bandwidth for sending pieces to random peers (not necessarily known-good partners, so called preferred peers), in hopes of discovering even better partners and to ensure that newcomers get a chance to join the swarm.
